Strata

Pictured Rocks is a remarkable formation of sandstone cliffs in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They are 50-60 feet high and drop straight down into Lake Superior. There are wet woodlands above so water is continually seeping down through the stone. The brilliant colors are the result of metals and minerals leaching out onto the faces of the cliffs. The cliffs are north facing so they don’t get direct sun which would fade the colors. Also, they can only be seen (or photographed) from a boat.
